The allure of the Alpines

The High Country is a haven for 4x4 enthusiasts offering a diverse landscape that includes towering peaks, remote bushland, crystal-clear rivers, meadows of vibrant wildflowers in the warmer months, and a rich cultural heritage dating back as far as the late 1800s.

The best way (in our opinion!) to experience the raw beauty of this area is by embarking on an exhilarating four wheel drive adventure. And there's no better companion for your journey than Dingo Trax, one of the most trusted and experienced four wheel drive tour companies in the region.

We’ll be trekking some 400 kilometres of steep inclines, panoramic ridgelines and cool river crossings, and finishing up at the foothills of the High Country in Valencia Creek.

After 4 days of hitting the tracks, you won't look at the High Country quite the same again after exploring first-hand the rich history and natural wonders of The Alpine National Park.

Spectacular sites along the way

This part of Australia is a hidden gem in our opinion. It’s tucked away in a corner of the country not many people know about and have the pleasure of exploring - which makes it even more appealing.

The historic mountain huts are perhaps the most iconic part of this wild, remote region. These huts served various purposes and played a crucial role in the history and development of this rugged, isolated landscape. They offered shelter from extreme and unpredictable weather… The high altitudes and exposed landscapes make the area susceptible to severe cold, high winds and heavy snowfall. They offered a refuge and rest for travelers, hikers and skiers. In some cases, huts were built for grazing and farming, serving as shelters for shepherds, cattlemen and other workers who tended to their animals and crops in high altitude during the warmer months. These huts are also testament to the early European settlement and exploration of the region, holding stories of pioneering families, gold prospectors and the many challenges they faced in such a remote environment.

Some of the charmingly rustic huts we’ll pass on our way through the High Country include Jamison Hut, Bluff Hut, Guys Hut, Millers Hut and Moroka Hut - just to name a few!

You’ll have a new appreciation for the past and all the people who made an alpine hut home, once you’re standing next to one of these treasured icons.

We’ll also take in other spectacular sites along the way such as Conglomerate Falls, Pieman Falls and Bryces Gorge. Not to mention amazing views from the top of Mount Wellington, boasting an elevation of 1634 metres.

There’s nothing quite like traversing along on a remote 4x4 track and looking out over the vast wilderness in the middle of nowhere. Especially how quiet and peaceful it is when we make a stop for photos. Truly breathtaking.
