Itinerary

We leave from Marree and travel past Lake Eyre South – Kati Thanda National Park, to William Creek near Anna Creek Station, the largest cattle station in the world at just over 6 million acres. We travel up the Oodnadatta Track past Dalhousie Springs where we can swim in the thermal water, and then go on to Mount Dare and further to where we enjoy a stop-over at Molly Clark's Old Andado Homestead. We visit Mac Clark’s Conservation Reserve and explore the Acacia Peuce trees, commonly known as the Waddywood tree which was used to make the waddy waddy for Aboriginal hunting, and which are found only in two other places in the world. Next, we head up Binn’s Track to Alice Springs and East along the Plenty Highway to the start of the Hay River Track. After stopping at Batton Hill we spend several nights camping on this remote track. Things to see on the Hay River Track include camels, wildflowers, and majestic river gums. In the past this part of the Northern Simpson was closed to the public. The aboriginal custodians now welcome us to their land, and we might even learn how to find bush tucker. Finally, we head to Poeppel Corner, marked up in 1880 during a survey of the Western section of the border between Queensland and South Australia, and across the QAA Line towards Birdsville. We stop at Big Red and take in the spectacular views over the mighty Simpson Desert, the biggest parallel dune desert in the world, then on to enjoy what Birdsville has to offer, including a beer in the famous Birdsville Pub. After these wonderful adventures we head South down the Birdsville Track past Mungerannie and back to Marree.

Itinerary

We depart Marree, heading north up the Oodnadatta Track, including over 600 kilometres of legendary Outback track and taking us on a journey of discovery, exploration and imagination. We take in the views of Lake Eyre South - part of the massive Kati Thanda - Lake Eyre salt lake - which is the lowest point on the Australian mainland (some 15 meters below sea level) and continue on to Anna Station, made famous by Sidney Kidman, the great Australian ‘Cattle King’. It remains to this day, the biggest working cattle station in the world. Our desert 4x4 tag along tours take in the best of the Australian outback. Discover gems like Birdsville, Lake Eyre, Anna Station and the amazing scenery of The Simpson Desert from the comfort of your own four wheel drive. We make our way to Mount Dare on the western edge of the Simpson Desert, where you will be able to swim in the famous natural artesian springs at Dalhousie, located in Witjira National Park (on the Western fringe of the Simpson Desert), Northeast of Oodnadatta in Northern South Australia. We stop in to wander around Old Andado - the homestead of Molly Clark - first settled in the early 1900s and learn about life in the Outback over 100 years ago. You will also see waddy waddy trees (Acacia Peuce), still only found in a few places in the Outback and only in two other places in the world! Commonly known as the Waddywood tree, these were used to make the waddy waddy sticks for Aboriginal hunting. Then it's off to the famous Madigan Line, made famous by Cecil Madigan who led the first scientific-based expedition across the Simpson Desert back in 1939. We'll stay in some of his old camps along the way. Next up, we head off to the iconic town of Birdsville - one of Australia’s most recognised outback towns - situated on the Hay River Track, for a well-earned beer at one of the best-known pubs in the world. Finally, after a drive down the legendary Birdsville Track back to Marree we see the end of our adventure.

Dingo Trax combines years of experience and a passion for exploring the vast Australian landscape, with a desire to help other 4WD adventure seekers who don’t quite have the confidence and know-how to go it alone.

Founder and tour leader John Clarkson has travelled far and wide to discover some of the most amazing scenery this unique country has to offer. In fact, John’s love of the great outdoors has seen him clock up hundreds of thousands of four wheeler kilometres on and off road.

From a very young age, John was always off exploring and enjoying camping trips with family and friends. It’s how he met Burtie, an old bushman and woodcutter from NSW. John still uses the skills and expertise Burtie taught him to this day, and is keen to pass on his knowledge to fellow Dingo Trax adventurers. John’s quest to offer a safe, supportive and unforgettable four wheel drive experience has led him to collaborate with some of the most experienced and skilled 4x4 enthusiasts the Simpson Desert and Victorian High Country has to offer.

Customer testimonials

I've done 2 tours with Dingo Trax. The first one was on the Hay River track in 2022 and the second was across the Madigan Line in 2024. Both were in the amazing Simpson Desert and both were exceptional experiences. John 'Dingo' is a great fella and extremely knowledgeable. Joining a Dingo Trax tour ensures you get to go to all the great places and see things others can't show you - but most importantly you do it all with a feeling of safety and security. Highly recommend. 5 Stars.
